Major duties

Plans, coordinates and controls shipment of material and equipment. Prepares shipment documentation for material and equipment shipped to include hazardous materials. Provides advice and assistance to customers concerning all aspects and phases of the DLA Distribution Depot transportation and distribution functions. Provides status, resolves problems, prepares reports and traces shipment upon requests. Provides traffic management support through selection, approval, procurement and use of safe and effective services carriers at the least cost to the government. Determines the most efficient economical rates and routes to final destination involving domestic inbound and export shipments, originating at any point worldwide. Is responsible for the classification, rating, routing and movement of a wide range of commodities, which includes hazardous materials. Plans shipping dates, material pick up and loading times of equipment and material to be shipped from DLA Distribution Depot to other government activities, both overseas and CONUS. Performs the day to day functions of the verification and payment of invoices utilizing various automated systems. Computes and verifies transportation costs and contacts carriers for rates when required. Determines economical routing based on technical review of guides and tariffs. Reviews automated documentation for all types of shipments taking appropriate action to correct any invalid, void, or missing information.

Qualification

To qualify for a Transportation Assistant, your qualifications must include: A. Specialized Experience: To quality at the GS-07 Ievel, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience are identified in the Major Duties section of this vacancy announcement and may also include: -Determines the most efficient economical rates and routes to final destination involving domestic inbound and export shipments. -Classifies, rates, routes and moves a wide range of commodities including hazardous material. B. Typing Proficiency Requirement: In addition to meeting the experience requirements, applicants for these positions must show possession of the following skills, as appropriate: Must be able to type 40 words per minute. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: Work may require some physical effort such as standing, walking, bending or sitting. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 40 pounds. Work Environment: Work is performed in both an office and warehouse environment. The employee may be subject to temperature variances, dirt, dust, noise, machinery and normal warehouse hazards, and may be required to wear safety shoes. Applicants must comply with the Exceptional Family Member Program requirements as outlined in the DoD Instruction 1315.19. If an employee brings a child to an overseas location and that child is entitled to attend a DoD school on a space-required basis in accordance with DoDEA Regulation 1342.13, the DoDEA and the Military Department responsible for providing related services will ensure that the child, if eligible for special education, receives a free appropriate public education, including related services pursuant to DoDI 1342.12 and DoDM 1342.12. If an employee brings an infant or toddler (up to 3 years of age) to an overseas location, and that infant or toddler is entitled to attend the DoDEA on a space-required basis in accordance with DoDEA Regulation 1342.13, then the Military Department responsible for early intervention services (EIS) will provide the infant or toddler with the required EIS in accordance with the eligibility criteria consistent with DoDI 1342.12 and DoDM 1342.12. Employees (and family members) who require medical or dental care in the overseas location will be responsible for obtaining and paying for such care. Access for civilian employees and their families to military medical and dental treatment facilities is on a space-available and reimbursable basis only.

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
