Job summary
You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION, RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Major duties
You will overhaul and refuel nuclear powered vessels, in a wide range of radiological control operations. You will assure adherence to radiological control requirements for assignments which involve numerous processes in several high skill level trades. You will serve as a major radiological control representative in "dry run" planning, practice, or "mock-up" sessions in preparation for major repairs and overhaul or refueling operations. You will take charge of response to radiation related emergencies and incidents until replaced by a senior radiological control supervisor or manager. You will perform other duties as assigned.
Qualification
For the GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying knowledge of a wide range of radiological control practices and requirements, together with knowledge of various processes in several trades sufficient to monitor and control several phases of refueling and primary systems components replacement; suggests radiological improvement to local procedures; and controls complex incidents. Experience demonstrating ability to determine the cause of serious incidents and solve radiological control problems that lower grade technicians cannot solve. Experience reviewing work procedures in the various high-level trades and test procedures on radioactive systems for radiological implications. Experience appraising work procedures and recommending more efficient and safe methods for radiation/contamination related evolutions. For the GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying knowledge of a wide range of radiological control practices and requirements, together with knowledge of various processes in several trades sufficient to monitor and control several phases of refueling and primary systems components replacement; suggests radiological improvement to local procedures; and controls complex incidents. Experience reviewing local radiological control practices and procedures to include determining deficiencies in the actions taken by Radiological Control Technicians or other personnel and making recommendations as to needed changes or additions in training, radiological procedures or work practices. Experience documenting deficiencies in writing reports and assessments and a rudimentary understanding of casual analysis and problem solving. Education
In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify for the position with the following education or combination of both education and experience: For GS-08: Successful completion of one and a half years (27 semester hours) of graduate level education graduate-level education leading to a Master's degree from an accredited college or university. For GS-07: Successful completion one full year (18 semester hours) of directly-related graduate-level education leading to a Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
