Job summary

About the Position: As a Deckhand assigned to the Mat Sinking Unit, you will be assigned to accomplish a combination of tasks in connection with the making up and breaking of tows. NOTE: The duty location of this position will be wherever the M/V Benyaurd is located. NOTE: This position is a Permanent, Full-Time, Seasonal Appointment. You will be placed in non pay status when work is unavailable.

Major duties

Secure floating plant with manila and synthetic lines, cables, wire straps, rachets, etc. Perform housekeeping and maintenance tasks such as washing down decks, chip-ping paint and rust from bulkheads, timber heads, cavels, deck equipment, and painting. Greasing moving deck equipment such as capstans, tow winch, or electric cranes to ensure working condition. Assisting other craftsmen with maintenance and repairs.

Duties include: Conducting channel patrol activities, outboard motor operation, deck equipment repair, general maintenance and housekeeping on a floating plant. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Reliability and Dependability as a Deckhand Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Efforts: Work requires substantial physical effort when handling heavy cables, equipment, and machinery; while making and breaking tows; and when washing, scrubbing, cleaning, chipping, and painting surfaces. Heavy lifting up to 40 pounds may be required. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and crouching and walking. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes in heat and cold and heavy rainfall. Workers are exposed to paint fumes, and are subject to cuts and bruises while working with equipment. There is the possibility of eye injury while chipping paint and rust. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, and dirty or cramped situations.
