Tooele Army Depot (TEAD) is an US Army Military Installation located approximately 45 miles West of Salt Lake City, Utah. TEAD is a premier active joint ammunition storage site. TEAD is responsible for shipping, storing, receiving, inspecting, demilitarization, and maintaining training and war reserve conventional ammunition. Tooele’s Ammunition Equipment and Manufacturing Directorate (AEMD) designs and manufacturers ammunition peculiar equipment (APE) used in maintenance and demilitarization of munitions for all the Department of Defense (DoD). The Depot is in Tooele County and surrounded by the communities of Tooele, Grantsville, Stockton, and Rush Valley. The area surrounding the depot is as an urban center for a highly varied productive industrial and agricultural industries.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The position will install, repair, maintain and overhaul gas and oil-fired, high and lower pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment to meet steam supply demands for heating and power.

Major duties

Overhaul, repair and maintain gas and oil fired, high- and low-pressure boilers. Firing and operation of one or more types of combination of automatic or hand-fixed, high or low pressure, boilers. Remove boiler tubes for examination and evaluate tube condition to report on results. Install, test, and adjust various safety cutoffs, automatic regulating controls and thermostats. Perform plumbing, pipefitting, rigging, welding and repairing equipment on boiler systems.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Assistance with maintenance and overhaul of gas and oil-fired boilers. I can observe temperature, pressure and amperage gauges and meters. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: In repairing boilers, incumbent lifts, stoops, and carries heavy objects such as bricks, burners, tubes, valves, and piping. May be required to work in cramped and awkward positions such as kneeling and crawling into boiler furnaces and drums through manholes. Requires physical dexterity to reach and use hands to check work concealed from view, and a high degree of rapid mental and physical coordination. Working Conditions: Works almost entirely inside, outside, or on top of boilers and is in constant contact with dampness, soot, poor ventilation, noise, vibrations, steam and dirt. Works with hand and power tools and in close contact with safety valves, gauges and gas valves. Protective devices include safety shoes, hard hats, coveralls, safety glasses, respirators, face shields, heavy gloves and ear plugs.
