Job Description

Position Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to and generally supports efforts relating to Amentum’s SafeUp® Program.
  • Oversees training for all employees in operating procedures and safety requirements, including transportation for all departments to/from airfields, on-call taxi service, “bellhop” service, taxi service at the airfield, and dispatch functions.
  • Creates and maintains working schedules for vehicle operators and periodically rotates personnel between various tasking, including operating shuttle system vehicles, taxi driver, dispatcher, and additional seasonal transport requirements.
  • Responsible for allocating vans to various departments while ensuring appropriate vehicles are available for required shuttle tasking.
  • Oversees training for volunteer Recreation Department drivers, Long Duration Balloon (LDB) personnel, and vessel operations personnel.
  • Coordinates with other departments and agencies regarding shuttle and shift change requirements.
  • Develops and posts shuttle schedules at runways, McMurdo town center, and Scott Base.
  • Evaluates and documents employee performance throughout the season and is responsible for end-of-season evaluations for all employees.
  • Ensures all vehicle operators comply with safe operating practices and road etiquette.
  • Operates shuttle service vehicles on varying road surfaces in inclement weather conditions with consideration for passenger safety. Vehicles include 11-14 passenger vans, Foremost Delta II with passenger compartment, Foremost 56 passenger Terra Bus, and Kress/Caterpillar 730 tractor-trailer with 59-passenger module.
  • Transports passengers and flight crew members to and from the airfield ramp while obeying all airfield safety requirements.
  • Communicates on a daily basis with vehicle operators regarding schedules, road conditions, vehicle coordination, and community shuttle and taxi requirements.
  • Communicates with Antarctic Terminal Operations (ATO) staff daily to ensure smooth transition between all shifts.
  • Monitors shuttle vehicles for required preventive maintenance and schedules service with Vehicle Maintenance Facility.
  • Performs and documents required mechanical and fluid checks of shuttle vehicles prior to and during operation.
  • Maintains required shuttle and taxi logs, and compiles data for weekly and monthly reports.
  • Communicates via two-way radio in accordance with prescribed procedures and proper radio etiquette.
  • Monitors flight departure and return landing times, passenger transportation needs, taxi service needs, and all other various tasks as a dispatcher; dispatches tasking accordingly.
  • Provides light vehicle training for other departments as necessary. Provides large passenger vehicle training internally as necessary.
  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with ASC policy.
  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation (NSF), military, and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Actively participates in safety briefings and meetings. Performs Job Hazard Analyses, work center inspections, and other safety reports as required.
  • Must be able to interact with all team members in a positive and productive manner.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum one year vehicle and/or equipment operating experience with at least six months of operating large capacity passenger vehicles and/or tractor-trailer over-the-road vehicles.
  • One-year leadership and/or supervisory experience.

  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office Programs.

Preferred:

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger and/or air brake endorsement.
  • Minimum one year dispatching experience.

Physical and/or Other Requirements :

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
