Job Description

Job Description Summary

The Tooling Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining tools, fixtures, jigs, and related equipment that support our manufacturing and assembly operations. This role ensures that tooling enables safe, high-quality, repeatable, and cost-effective production, and provides direct technical support to the shop floor.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop tooling: Design and validate tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and dies to support new and existing products. Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD tools.
  • Support manufacturing operations: Analyze production processes and identify tooling improvements to enhance safety, quality, delivery, and cost. Troubleshoot tooling-related issues on the shop floor and implement corrective actions.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI): Collaborate with design engineering on DFM/DFA and tooling requirements for new products. Plan and implement tooling for new programs, including trials, validation, and handover to production.
  • Drive continuous improvement: Lead or support improvement activities that reduce cycle time, improve ergonomics, and minimize defects. Optimize existing tools for ease of use, robustness, and maintainability.
  • Manage documentation and standards: Generate and maintain tooling drawings, BOMs, specifications, and standard work. Ensure documentation is controlled, accurate, and compliant with internal and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate suppliers and cost: Work with internal and external tool makers for fabrication, repair, and modification. Support tooling cost estimates and make-buy decisions.
  • Ensure safety and compliance: Ensure tooling meets safety, ergonomic, and regulatory requirements. Conduct or support risk assessments and safety reviews for new and modified tooling.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3–5 years of experience in tooling, manufacturing engineering, or mechanical design in a production environment
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and basic mechanical/stress considerations
  • Knowledge of machining, fabrication, and other manufacturing processes
  • Experience with structured problem-solving (e.g., 5-Why, fishbone) and root cause analysis
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with production, quality, design, and supply chain teams

Preferred:

  • Experience in aerospace, high-precision, or highly regulated manufacturing environments
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing, continuous improvement (Kaizen), and standard work
  • Familiarity with PFMEA or similar risk analysis methods
  • Experience working with automation, PLC-controlled equipment, or advanced manufacturing technologies

Key Competencies

  • Strong safety focus in tooling concepts and designs
  • Quality mindset with a bias for robust, repeatable solutions
  • Customer orientation toward internal customers (operators, production leaders, and program teams)
  • Solid problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Continuous improvement mindset and willingness to challenge the status quo
