Job Description

Job Description Summary

As a material behavior engineer in the applied materials & behavior team, you use your materials expertise and statistical skills to thoroughly characterize various materials manufactured via additive modalities in multiple thermal states and configurations. Collaborate with Material Application Engineers, Sourcing, Program Managers, Quality, Test Laboratories, and Design engineering to define test plans, manage internal and outside laboratory testing, present results to internal and external stakeholders, and ultimately set material allowables to be used for functional parts. Follow GE Aerospace, Colibrium, and industry best practices where applicable. This can be but is not limited to metallic alloys from iron, nickel, cobalt, titanium, and aluminum alloys. Utilize statistical approaches and engineering principles to explain physical metallurgy and resulting normal and abnormal material behaviors.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Define and execute complex, comprehensive test plans for the evaluation and measurement of material properties.
  • Compile and analyze large material datasets in Excel. Tabulate and plot data for presentation to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Utilize statistical methods and GE design practices to characterize material capability while providing comparisons to other manufacturing processes, GE historic performance, or industry publications as appropriate.
  • Own and maintain enterprise datasets and tools for the analysis, storage, change management, access, and use of material data.
  • Establish relationships with Sourcing and external vendors to maintain communication, testing progress, and spending within the bounds of contractual agreements.
  • Use engineering judgment where appropriate to supersede statistical indications or provide recommendations when uncertainty exists.
  • Use technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations.
  • Use multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to obtain concurrence. Monitor and promptly communicate progress and setbacks to stakeholders.
  • Present technical data to a diversity of audiences, communicate succinct takeaways, debate contradictions, and recommend technical outputs and next steps that drive appropriate decisions.
  • Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements. Explain difficult or sensitive information and work to gain concurrence.
  • Represent Colibrium Additive at additive manufacturing and industry standard events. Present at customer events including program milestone reviews or technology maturation gates.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related Engineering Discipline.
  • Minimum 7 additional years of experience in material characterization

Desired Characteristics

  • Masters of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science from an accredited university or college.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly around technical documentation, testing conditions for internal and external labs, creation of external-facings Statements of Work, and ownership over testing specifications, drawings and data templates.
  • Understanding of metallurgy and consolidated material characteristics, particularly with respect to how it impacts form, fit, and function of additively manufactured parts.
  • Knowledge and experience with preparatory, machining, measurement, and testing steps aligned with industry standards while fitting within program requirements.
  • Background in material characterization, including metallography, thermal and mechanical property testing with subsequent data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to use statistical approaches to describe typical material behaviors and outliers and experience demonstrating how physical metallurgy explains behavior.
  • Basic understanding of Additive manufacturing process (i.e., laser powder bed, electron beam powder bed, binder jet) working knowledge and/or operation experience.
