Job Description

Amentum, a global leader in advanced engineering, technical, and professional services serving the US government, allies, and critical infrastructure sectors, is seeking a Solid Waste Operator to support a unique US Navy program based on the island of Diego Garcia.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate equipment and machinery required for solid waste operations in accordance with the Government-accepted Solid Waste Management Center (SWMC) Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manual.
  • Perform tasks related to the sorting, recycling, collection, transportation, and disposal of solid waste, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Conduct inspections, monitoring, and maintenance of solid waste equipment and vehicles to ensure proper operation and minimize downtime.
  • Safely operate heavy equipment, such as loaders, compactors, excavators, balers, and other machinery used in waste management operations.
  • Adhere to environmental and waste handling regulations to prevent contamination and ensure proper waste management practices.
  • Perform site cleanup, waste segregation, and recycling preparation to support the waste minimization program.
  • Monitor waste collection sites and containers to ensure proper use and report any misuse or maintenance issues.
  • Ensure personal and team compliance with safety procedures for the operation of waste management equipment, processing, and disposal tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records of waste collected, transported, and disposed of in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Provide support for hazardous materials handling and assist in maintaining documentation for environmental compliance.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in solid waste operations, sanitation, or waste management, including equipment operation.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Fully qualified and capable of safely operating equipment required for solid waste operations, as listed in the Solid Waste Management Center (SWMC) Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manual.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental, health, and safety standards related to waste handling, processing, and disposal.
  • Effective communication skills, with proficiency in English (both written and oral) to communicate with team members and management.
  • Ability to maintain and complete detailed records for compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
  • Passport should be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain requirements for the duration of deployment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce is preferred.
  • Valid country driver's license and passport.
  • Country visa (as required in line with the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide).
  • Experience with solid waste management operations in compliance with U.S. government or Department of Defense contracts.
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste handling, recycling programs, and spill response procedures.
  • Certifications in heavy equipment operation or environmental management practices.
  • Strong understanding of environmental compliance and waste reduction requirements.
