Riggers provide the kinetic energy of the shipbuilding business.  They operate the vast majority of cranes throughout the shipyard in addition to a wide assortment of forklifts with various capacities.  Riggers are also responsible for operation of the shipyard’s tug boats – moving ships between dry docks and piers, and mooring ships while at the piers and outfitting berths.

Riggers handle every component of a ship - from pipes and valves, to pumps, motors and electronic equipment, to the largest machinery and structural components – riggers are able to lift, manipulate, and set them into place.  To accomplish this, riggers must be able to calculate the weight and center of gravity of the item being handled, determine the capacity of the lift points, and calculate the angle imposed on the handling gear in order to select the most appropriate gear for the task at hand.

Riggers erect, maintain, and dismantle various types of scaffolding throughout the shipyard.  Each type is selected to best suit the physical location and intended use, to provide a safe working platform for personnel where none existed.

The Rigger’s Department is also responsible for purchasing, maintaining, and issuing the myriad assortment of tools used in the shipbuilding business.  This section of the department also installs and maintains various types of ventilation equipment onboard ships to prevent dangerous atmospheres from developing.

About Huntington Ingalls Industries

Huntington Ingalls Industries

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is the largest military shipbuilding company in the United States and a cornerstone of American naval and maritime defense capability. The company designs, builds, overhauls, and maintains some of the most complex vessels in the world, including nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, submarines, amphibious assault ships, and advanced surface combatants that support U.S. Navy and Coast Guard operations.

For job seekers, HII offers careers across a uniquely broad mix of skilled trades, engineering, and mission support roles. Opportunities range from welders, pipefitters, electricians, and machinists in world-class shipyards to engineers working in naval architecture, software, cyber, AI, and systems integration. The company is especially attractive to veterans, apprentices, and cleared professionals who want hands-on work supporting national defense at massive industrial scale.

Unlike many defense companies focused primarily on software or systems integration, HII is deeply rooted in heavy industry and shipbuilding, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern defense technologies. Employees contribute directly to building and sustaining the U.S. Navy’s fleet, while increasingly working on advanced areas like unmanned systems, autonomy, and digital ship design as the company modernizes its production capabilities.

As global naval competition intensifies and the U.S. continues investing in fleet expansion, modernization, and maritime readiness, HII remains one of the most strategically important employers in the defense industrial base. For professionals seeking stable, long-term careers with tangible national impact—whether in the shipyard or in advanced engineering roles—Huntington Ingalls Industries stands out as a foundational pillar of American defense.
