Overview

Department 448 Electronic Development Lab (EDL) is one of two electronics shops within the Groton shipyard. The EDL specializes in fabricating prototypes/Engineering Design Modules (EDMs), test equipment, Fly-By-Wire (FBW) & Submarine Flight Critical Components (SFCC)s, shipboard electronic assemblies and fleet support through Industrial Sales. EDL technicians and engineers work with a multitude of internal and external groups to accomplish each task. The EDL has its own model shop for machining and welding prototypes/EDMs such as: cabinets, extrusion molds, mock-ups and test enclosures. The EDL has a wide variety of electrical and mechanical talent with the drive to complete each task thoroughly and efficiently.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the Stern Area Systems(SAS) and Special Projects group. The group is responsible for SAS components and special projects from various engineering groups utilizing the electronic and model shop in the EDL. The group is made up of 15 engineers and Marine Draftsmens Association (MDA) technicians responsible for these components. Work performed involves safety critical and highly precise systems, and must be performed with the highest level of quality. The group interfaces with other Combat & Weapons Systems (CWS) departments, Groton and Quonset Point shipyards, EB facilities, as well as other engineering disciplines.

Travel to the various lab sites infrequent but expected. The candidate will be responsible for employee skill and competency development, briefing packages for field repairs and modification for in service submarines.

Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for preparation and coordination of meetings for construction and installation of engineering design models, design recommendations, technical integration and block build transitions.



Responsibilities

This job requires strong electrical and mechanical component knowledge as well as workflow experience, demonstrated ability to lead a team to a successful conclusion, and the ability to manage a group of engineers/technicians, while still meeting budget and schedule constraints. The successful candidate must be familiar with EB system engineering processes, technical directives, and MDA management. This position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to make presentations to the customer and EB management. Key skills and focus areas include:

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 4+ years of experience in electronics
  • 2+ years of leadership responsibility
  • Current DoD Secret clearance
Preferred:

  • Submarine combat system knowledge, system integration experience
  • Engineering development model development, implementation and test
  • Mechanical design and fabrication experience
  • Electronic simulator design and integration experience
  • Experience planning use of production workflows and engineering problem resolution
