The Naval & Oceanic Systems business unit headquartered in Annapolis, MD is seeking dependable individuals willing to work in a collaborative environment and that are interested in expanding their horizons. The Mechanical Engineering Department is seeking a Principal Mechanical Systems Engineer / Senior Principal Mechanical Systems Engineer with a naval architecture or ocean engineering background in submersibles and underwater vehicles to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals.

Essential Functions:

Perform naval architectural roles associated with underwater vehicle system design including requirements and operations analysis, conceptual vehicle design, pressure hull sizing, variable ballast assessment, basic hydrodynamic analysis, energy system sizing, propulsion/propulsor design, weight, equilibrium, stability, and trim calculations and tests, and auxiliary systems design.  The successful candidate will be expected to provide technical leadership to their programs in all areas of naval architecture.

The candidate must be able to collaborate in a team environment, prioritize and adjust tasks to accomplish the project result, prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously, and comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Mechanical Systems Engineer (Naval Architect):

  • BS degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or STEM equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the design, testing and/or operation of marine vehicles or MS degree with 3 years of experience

  • Proficiency with naval architectural principles, tools, and calculations

  • Proficiency in using common engineering design, production, analysis, and office tools

  • US citizen with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI and pass a polygraph

Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Mechanical Systems Engineer (Naval Architect):

  • BS degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or STEM equivalent and a minimum of 8 years of experience in the design, testing and/or operation of marine vehicles or MS degree with 6 years of experience

  • Proficiency with naval architectural principles, tools, and calculations

  • Proficiency in using common engineering design, production, analysis, and office tools

  • US citizen with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI and pass a polygraph

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skills/experience in the performance modeling, design, testing and/or operation of manned submersibles, underwater vehicles, and launch and recovery systems

  • Experience in towed systems and umbilical dynamic analysis including the use of Orcaflex

  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling in NX

  • Experience in the construction, testing, and certification of underwater vehicles

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $135,800.00 - $203,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
