Fluid Systems Engineer

Responsibilities for this Position

Department 410 Future Plant Studies (FPS) Propulsion Plant Fluid Systems has openings for highly motivated engineers to support the development of new submarine propulsion plant designs for the Steam Plant Fluids team. The newest propulsion plant will be the most advanced the U.S. Navy has ever fielded which presents significant technical challenges. There is maximum potential to influence the overall design of the boat. The candidate will work in a multi-discipline engineering group whose purpose is to develop future submarine propulsion plant concepts that meet the U.S. Navys challenging technical goals while minimizing development, acquisition, and life cycle costs. In order to achieve this, the candidate will lead teams to develop these new ideas and concepts and work to bring them to fruition.

Responsibilities include concept development for future steam plants including fluid system design (types and sizes of the systems), analysis (impacts to safety, cost, schedule, performance, operations, and maintenance), arrangement integration (where things are located on the boat), and component development (what is needed to support the overall plant design). Frequent interface with multiple Electric Boat engineering disciplines, vendors, Newport News Shipbuilding, Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), and NAVSEA 08 is required.

• The candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational, project management, oral and written communication skills
• Candidate must be detail oriented, highly motivated, be able to work independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in an engineering environment
• Desired skills include: reading and developing diagrams/schematics and construction drawings; deriving requirements from specifications; making material and component selections; and performing engineering calculations

Required:

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Marine/Ocean, or Nuclear engineering degree
• 1-5 years of related engineering experience

Preferred:

• Experience working on propulsion plant fluid systems, components and/or arrangements
• Experience with propulsion plant design, operations, maintenance, and/or testing
• Experience as a Naval nuclear operator
• Experience with NX/Teamcenter
