Overview

Engineers will support design, test, and construction efforts for the LOS ANGELES, OHIO, SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA and COLUMBIA Classes of Submarines.


There are four functional areas providing engineering support for Special Emphasis Programs (SUBSAFE/DSS-SOC) requirements, shock qualification requirements, underwater explosion (UNDEX) large vehicle shock test programs and fastener engineering.


Responsible for providing engineering assessment, oversight, and support required to satisfy the Contractual requirements for SUBSAFE engineered products. Technical oversight and development of SUBSAFE Program design products including SUBSAFE Program Instructions and Procedures. The position accomplishes work across multiple Submarine Classes and includes the following: New Construction, Planning Yard and Follow Yard support. Technical and programmatic assessment of SUBSAFE Engineering Reports (ER)/Change Notices (CN) for requisite SUBSAFE Design Reviews (SSDR) and deliverables. And includes support for Ship Specific Certification Audits and Supervisor of Shipbuilding and NAVSEA Functional audits. The position requires direct interface with other EB Engineering Organizations, EB Program Offices, the SUBSAFE Certification Organization, Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP) and NAVSEA as required. Selected individuals will also be cross trained in SEP Deep Submergence Systems Scope of Certification (DSS-SOC) work performed by the Dept.

Responsible for coordinating and tracking the shock qualification of equipment in all classes of submarines. These efforts include the following: performing standard mechanical stress calculations and comparisons of material properties to demonstrate shock resistance of equipment; conducting reviews of installation drawings, detailed drawings, shock test procedures and test reports; provide test support at Electric Boat, Vendor and Sub-contractor facilities.


Responsible for the concept, design, procurement, fabrication and installation of equipment into various underwater shock test vehicles. Shock Vehicle Test Programs supports test operations at a government shock test site and documentation of the test results.


Responsible for fastener issues associated with design and construction. Fastener Engineering involves providing guidance on calculation methods, drawing and specification requirements and fastener applications that include whole ship and company fastener issues.

Qualifications

Required:

    Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Marine Engineering0-5 years engineering experience.Willingness to work nights or weekends when needed to support schedules.Position may require travel.
Preferred:

    Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering
