Summary:

Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Boiler Mechanic will perform hands-on boiler operation tasks on maintenance or construction projects, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the PM Foreman. Tasking is based on ASC schedule requirements.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on boiler systems: hydronic, hot water heaters, steam HVAC systems and associated equipment
  • Maintain boiler systems in accordance with provisions of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Boiler systems may include steam, hydronic, hot water heaters, along with other types of heating systems, pumps, forced air furnaces, air handlers
  • Maintain, monitor, troubleshoot and repair station boilers and associated systems, heat exchangers, pumps, controls, air handlers, commercial steam kitchens, and zone valves in all buildings.
  • Maintain, monitor, troubleshoot and repair circulating pumps, back-up pumps, heat exchangers, strainers, valves, expansion tanks, air separators, unit heaters, heating coils and system controls to assure adequate operations
  • Inspect all glycol and steam lines for damage
  • Perform preventive maintenance in accordance with the preventive maintenance program
  • Monitor, regulate and repair fuel lines and air adjustments for the boilers
  • Monitor, repair and maintain boiler control systems
  • Commission and startup new equipment
  • Submit reports as required by supervisor
  • Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working hours
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved
  • Advise Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirements
  • Accomplish tasking working from Job Plans, verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable specifications and codes.
  • Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directed
  • Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weather
  • Proactively identify any unsafe conditions or hazards and communicate them effectively
  • Work directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking
  • Learn and use computer-based labor, material, and maintenance tracking applications
  • Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements
  • Other duties as required

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in boiler operation and complete hydronic and steam HVAC systems maintenance and repair
  • Documented experience in construction, repair, and/or maintenance of commercial, residential, and/or industrial facilities’ boiler systems

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenance manual and manufacturer’s troubleshooting guides to accomplish tasking
  • Experienced developing written work plans, job hazard analysis, and job safety analysis related to the work activities under a permit to work system
  • Proficient in LOTO procedures for various tasking
  • Proficient in confined space safety protocols
  • Proficient in risk assessment and determination of PPE appropriate to specific tasking
  • Knowledgeable of limits of PPE and proper maintenance of PPE
  • Familiar with fall protection and respirator use
  • Competent analyzing situations and making technical and safety decisions based on specifications and applicable codes and manufacturer guidelines
  • Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problems
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications

Preferred:

  • Certificate in Steam Boiler Operation/Maintenance
  • ASSE 19210 hydronic Heating & Cooling Certificate
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management

Physical and/or Other Requirements :

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
