Northrop Grumman, Space Systems, is currently seeking an Automation Technician 3/4 to support our Automation Controls Engineering team at the Promontory Utah facility.

Responsibilities Include:

A Process Automation Technician is responsible for leading a team to troubleshoot, repair, modify and maintain a variety of Allen Bradley PLC’s, VFD’s and other control systems. The technician is required to perform tasks like software control, troubleshooting/programming PLC and HMI programming, and troubleshooting and replacing electrical hardware (e.g. PLC’s, I/O, sensors, etc.). The technician will assist with development of practices to minimize downtime and increase reliability of automated plant equipment. An Automation Technician also performs test readings using several different instruments, including analog signal testers, power monitors, oscilloscopes, signal generators and digital multimeters.

Education/Certifications

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent training in Electronics Technology

Basic Requirements for Automation Technician:

  • Experience
    • Automation Technician 3: 5+ years working in industry as an electronic technician
    • Automation Technician 4: 10+ years working in industry as an electronic technician
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work on equipment, including climbing ladders to access equipment on roofs in all weather, using man lifts and scissor lifts when necessary.
  • Ability to work in hazardous environments including Electrical Cabinets and around Energetic Material.
  • Understand and follow electrical schematics proficiently.
  • Troubleshoot/Diagnose machine electrical control systems hardware (e.g. PLC, Servos, VFD’s, RTD’s, TC’s, etc.).
  • Understand PLC ladder logic and HMI logic for troubleshooting equipment (Allen Bradley PLCs Preferred).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross‑functional teams.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Familiar with Windows 11.
    • Installing/Uninstalling software.
    • Shared account access
    • Remote access
  • Familiar with Allen Bradley PLC/HMI systems.
    • Software installation and licensing.
    • Communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, etc.)
    • RecipePRO
  • Familiar with AC/DC drives and servo systems.
  • Experience working with 480 Volt / 3 phase equipment.
  • Retrofit obsolete components and systems including controls.
  • Familiarity of NDT systems, CNC machines, process/instrumentation controls, camera systems and fire alarm systems.

Knowledge and experience using oscilloscopes and various high voltage measurement test equipment.

Primary Level Salary Range: $57,500.00 - $95,900.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $68,300.00 - $113,900.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
