Summary

Job Description

Leads, directs, and reviews the work of Engineers and Technicians in a laboratory setting.  Communicates internally and externally to explain and gain cooperation on policies and practices.  Makes improvements to processes, systems, and solutions.  Plans and establishes goals and objectives with short term impacts on operational goals.  Requires knowledge of leading and managing projects, processes, and employees.  Performs a variety of duties in the mechanical and chemistry areas of the laboratory. Constructs, troubleshoots, calibrates, adjusts, tests, and maintains laboratory test instrumentation. Performs work from specifications, operating manuals, and written material test instructions.  Works with complex test instrumentation and computer systems. Operates related test instrumentation, conducts routine and complex testing, and reports data in prescribed format.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise, direct, and review the work of Engineers and Technicians.
  • Provide input on hiring, firing, promotion, and compensation decisions.
  • Establish goals and objectives.
  • Improve processes to enhance performance and efficiency of the work area.
  • Work with lab instrumentation such as FTIR, Instrons, DSC, Microtracs, titrators, & HPLC.
  • Sample and test raw materials, propellants, explosives, and other materials. 
  • Prepare and collect raw test data.
  • Clean, assemble and dismantle test hardware, equipment, and apparatus.
  • Perform laboratory support work such as instrument set-up, calibration, inventory, and inspections.
  • Reviews submitted test data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Approves test reports for distribution.
  • Reviews and submit lab documentation (test and calibration procedures).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 6 years minimum of prior related chemistry lab experience. Graduate Degree with 4 years minimum of prior related chemistry lab experience.  In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of prior related chemistry lab experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of testing explosives and energetic materials
