Northrop Grumman is looking for a Printed Circuit Board Designer - Layout to support our programs throughout the San Diego site.

Responsibilities:

  • Uses Xpedition layout to place and route printed circuit boards, frequently pushing the limits of the technology, often under schedule pressure. 
  • Follows IPC standards to design circuit boards that are reliable, cost effective, and meeting high expectations of performance.
  • Leverages deep knowledge of high-speed digital and RF principles to guarantee successful realization of complex circuit designs.
  • Works closely with electrical engineering to understand the design’s constraints, such as high-speed routing or sensitive signals.
  • May make minor update to the schematic, with prior approval, to simplify routing and create a more elegant design.
  • Works closely with mechanical engineering to ensure component heights and PCB envelope meet design requirements.
  • Collaborates with manufacturing to determine the construction of the PCB, including stackup, feature sizes, and materials, to maximize producibility and minimize errors.
  • Understands when advanced layout techniques (HDI, via-in-pad, backdrilling, etc.) are needed and knows how to effectively integrate them into the design.
  • Attends program meetings and design reviews and provides feedback to the team.
  • Generates and checks output files using Valor NPI.

Basic Qualifications for Printed Circuit Board Designer - Layout:

  • 5 years of experience with a Bachelors degree STEM, or 3 years of experience with a Masters or 1 year of experience with a PhD.
  • Knowledge of Xpedition Layout and Valor NPI ECAD tools
  • Background designing to IPC standards, especially IPC Class 3
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with electrical engineering
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering concepts
  • Use of mechanical drawings and 3D files to inform layout constraints
  • Familiar with high-speed digital signals, differential pairs, crosstalk, impedance control, etc.
  • Knowledge of RF and analog design principles such as transmission lines, isolation, mixed signal layout, etc.
  • Experience with High Density Interconnect (HDI) layout concepts such as blind and buried vias, via in pad, backdrilling, etc.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US Government secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications for Printed Circuit Board Designer – Layout:

  • Can read and rework an electrical schematic as needed
  • Ability to work cross functionally with mechanical engineering
  • Understanding of high voltage, high current, and power supply layout concepts
  • Able to collaborate with manufacturing, both internal teams and external PCB vendors to ensure producibility and yield

Primary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
