As a Milled Spar Sanding Machine Operator, you will be integral to our production process. You will be responsible for setting up, operating, and adjusting sanding machines to achieve precise surface finishes on components. Your expertise will guide you in interpreting blueprints and specifications to determine the necessary operations, while your attention to detail will ensure that all parts meet our high-quality standards. You will collaborate with various teams, troubleshoot issues, and maintain equipment, all while adhering to safety protocols. Position Responsibilities:

  • Set up, operate, and adjust milled spar sanding machines to sand parts, remove sharp edges, and achieve surface finishes that meet quality requirements.

  • Use blueprints, work orders, specifications, and visual inspections to determine surface finish requirements and prescribe the necessary sequence of operations.

  • Prescribe and perform hand finishing touch-up as needed.

  • Inspect completed spars for finish quality and notify supervisors and milling machine operators of any irregularities caused by worn or damaged cutters.

  • Maintain records of sanding machine operations according to shop practices.

  • Monitor the condition of sanding machine discs and replace them when necessary; check the water level on the dust collector and adjust as required.

  • Coordinate with Planning, MR&D, QC, and Maintenance regarding sanding machine operations.

  • May lead employees of lower classification.

  • Load and unload parts, such as those for the Acme Buffing Machine.

  • Prioritize tasks based on tie-ins, management instructions, shop requirements, and schedule constraints.

  • Obtain and read manufacturing plans and engineering drawings to determine work requirements; verify that work orders match part numbers and that prior operations have been approved and dated.

  • Identify and troubleshoot problems, developing plans to resolve issues such as finish irregularities or damage, and notify appropriate personnel as needed.

  • Load channel vents on the conveyor using pendant and overhead cranes; position channel vents on south roller tables with the inboard end closest to the burr machine.

  • Check machine settings, including pinch roller diameter, heads, air pressure, and safe operation; start the pinch roller and insert parts inboard end first, adjusting heads for optimal brush performance.

  • Unload channel vents and buy off operations on the tracer plan; remove burrs and break sharp edges using routers, scrapers, and sanders.

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in an approved manner; maintain personal and tool certification as required.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties. 

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.62 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Basic computer experience and competency.

  • Experience using basic math (e.g. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

  • 1+ years of experience reading and interpreting drawings or blueprints.

  • 2+ years of experience using power hand tools.

  • Fluent in both verbal and written English.

  • Able to lift, push and pull up to 35 pounds frequently within an 8 hour shift.

Typical Education & Experience:

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Pay: $25.32/hour, with potential to earn up to $54.76/hour in accordance with the terms of the relevant collective bargaining agreement.
