Summary

Job Description

The Aircraft Mechanic Machinist II produces replacement parts and new parts in making repairs of metal parts of mechanical equipment. Work involves most of the following: interpreting written instructions and specifications, planning and laying out of work, using a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments, setting up and operating standard machine tools. This incumbent is responsible for the shaping of metal parts to close tolerances, making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining; knowledge of the working properties of the common metals, selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment. In general, the machinist's work normally requires a rounded training in machine-shop practice, usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

  • Experience in Computer Numerical Controls (CNC) Mills and lathes programming, set up, operating, and maintaining.
  • Experience with conventional machines: lathes, mills, honing machines and surface grinders.
  • Experience with Omax water jet programming, set up, operating, and maintenance.
  • Familiar with Fagor, Haas, Okuma, and Funuc controllers.
  • Proficient with drawing on Master Cam and Bob Cad programming.
  • Read blueprints, spec, tech manuals, DMWRs, and be able to reverse engineer parts that have no drawings.
  • Proficient with heat treating all types of metals.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid up-to-date A&P license; and Two (2) years aviation maintenance experience, Three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience, and Two (2) of the years on the assigned Mission Design Series (UH60, AH64, and/or CH47). All experience must be within the (5) Five most recent years is required
  • If no A&P, shall have the Three (3) years aviation maintenance experience; consisting of Three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two (2) years on the assigned Mission Design Series (UH60, AH64, and/or CH47).
  • All experience must be within the (5) Five most recent years is required.
  • Five (5) years CNC experience.
  • Shall have a working knowledge of making entries in aircraft logbooks & records, military technical publications, and the Army's Unit Level Logistics Aviation Information System, ULLS-AE.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorizationNAC-I T1 Public Trust. Note: US Citizenship** is required for a facility credentials/authorization at the work location.

Preferred Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Shall possess the level of experience necessary to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by skill class Mechanic I and must have a combination of experience to repair engines, sheet metal, structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty, required to meet the assigned missions.
  • Shall have a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, diagnosing problems, repair procedures and replacement of parts: requires broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
  • Shall have basic knowledge of electrical theory.
  • Shall have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Must be able to Read, Write and Communicate effectively in English
  • Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and software applications.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts, requires broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair, must have basic knowledge of electrical theory, must have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
  • Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
  • Able to prioritize workloads to maintain schedules on assigned projects and is required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks.
  • The incumbent receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, will occasionally be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records.
  • When assigned to Engine Specialized Repair Activity, must hold a valid (current) FAA Powerplant license.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Will be required to handle dirty parts and lubricants.
  • Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, etc.
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.
  • May work in maintenance shop or outside.
  • Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
  • May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
