Job summary

You will serve as a RIGGER in the Transportation Division, of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Major duties

You will make difficult load routing judgments by considering such factors as size, shape, and location of the object. You will attach lifting devices to move heavy objects and support equipment. You will maintain awareness of work operations for possible safety hazards and take steps to eliminate or control hazards. You will use complex multipoint suspension techniques to permit maneuvering over, under, and around obstacles by tilting, dipping, and turning the suspended load. You will direct operators of cranes and other weight handling equipment by standard signals.

Qualification

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Planning, laying out and install rigging in industrial work operations; 2) Installing standing/running rigging used to operate equipment, machinery; 3) Installing various fittings used in the assembly and repair of weight handling gear; and 4) Using recognized hand or bell signals to direct crane operators during weight handling and/or lifting operations. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
