Job summary
You will serve as a MECHANICAL SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS) in the NON-NUCLEAR INSPECTION DIVISION, QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Major duties
You will inspect, witness, and perform tests on a quality assurance basis, on mechanical and piping equipment, devices, components, and systems. You will perform and evaluate the results of required non-destructive tests. You will compile and maintain information during inspections and tests, so that accurate required records may be formulated and maintained of all materials, components, and systems installed. You will investigate deficient conditions associated with software and hardware, and work processes. You will be in regular contact with shop supervisors and their subordinate personnel, to maintain control over the quality of workmanship and furnish information relative to prescribed specifications and required tests. You will perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualification

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is ABILITY TO INSPECT, such as: Planning the sequence of inspections during layout, fabrication installation, and testing of components and systems unique to nuclear submarine propulsion plant overhaul. Completing detailed reports of work observed and tests accomplished. Inspecting specialized shipboard systems that have been repaired and modified according to the most critical design specifications and requirements. Using tools, such as machinist scales, straight edges, torque wrenches, as well as precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, verniers, calipers, comparators and Johnson gages. Reading and interpreting plans, diagrams, illustrative and schematic instructional material, engineering directives, and inspection requirements involved with machining, pipe fitting, welding, insulating and testing.
