Job summary

About the Position: As a Marine Traffic Controller, you will direct all marine traffic transiting the canal taking into consideration limitation of water depth, canal width and vertical clearance of the bridges.

Major duties

Serve as marine traffic controller monitoring vessels transiting within Chesapeake and Delaware Canal waterway. Direct all marine traffic, including permitting two-way traffic passing situations. Monitor safety and integrity of government-owned marine traffic control equipment. Receives radio messages from pilots or operators of vessels requesting passage through the canal. Maintains traffic control sheet, recording pertinent data required such as time of canal entrance and passage of control points, dispatching actions, and any unusual or significant occurrences. Maintains other data forms such as communication log, foreign vessel log, and log for recording 200 foot plus vessels. Closing the canal due to adverse weather conditions such as fog is a judgmental decision made, in most situations, solely by the dispatcher.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Controlling or directing movement of vessels through confined water ways;2) Communicating orally using accepted marine radio techniques and equipment; and 3) Exercising judgment and decision-making regarding vessel movement. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Decision Making Planning and Evaluating Problem Solving Reading Comprehension Technical Competence Technology Application Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).

Evaluations
