Job summary

You will serve as a Machinist at the Norfolk Naval ship Detachment, Navy Foundry and Propellar Center of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Major duties

You will set up and efficiently machines naval ship propellers, dies and related parts utilizing a five axes CNC universal milling machine as the primary machine tool. You will work from blueprints and specifications of finished piece and use shop math to make calculations as necessary in planning. You will perform bench and floor assembly of machined parts to make precision working and frequently complex assemblies. You will operate various machines controlling speed and feed, bringing various tools to bear in successive operations.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. Ability to set up and operate a wide range of machines and machine tools such as vertical and horizontal mills. Ability to check work with assorted standard gages, calipers, micrometers and other precision measuring devices. Ability to work from technical work documents in the form of PCI's, drawings and blueprints. Ability to use shop mathematics, operations and procedures that allow the machinist to determine the best machines and tools to use for each assignment, and the optimal method to align the equipment to machine the stock to prescribed tolerances.
