This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & MRTFB in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned & operated manufacturing center located in NY.

Major duties

Operate one or more conventional or computer numerical control (CNC) machines to perform a specific machining operation in the machining of castings, forgings, or other raw stocks made of various metals, metal alloys, and other materials. On a conventional machine, control the machine feeds and speeds, change, and use different cutting tools for successive operations, and make minor changes in machine settings to maintain sizes or shape of the work piece. On a CNC machine, operate in the automatic mode utilizing the feeds and speeds programmed. Make minor adjustments and compensations for tool and work piece size differences, as well as tool changes. Ensure that dimensions meet those prescribed by blueprints, sketches, or other instructions using standard measuring instruments.

Qualification

POSITION IS ANNOUNCED AS A STANDING REGISTER (OPEN CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT): First cutoff date to evaluate candidates will be November 21st, 2024. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Machine Tool Operator without more than normal supervision which includes: 1) Operating machines and/or mechanical equipment; 2) Use of basic measuring instruments to check accuracy of dimensions; 3) Follow written instructions and/or sketches to ensure accuracy of a product. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending and stooping. In addition, the work requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds with assistance of other workers of lifting devices. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather. Inside work areas can range from well lit, climatically controlled to poorly illuminated work areas. Exposed to noise and dust from power saws, hammers, nailing machines, and related equipment. Subject to bruises, cuts, and other injuries from using hand and power tools. Safety equipment and protective devices are used to minimize hazards.
