Job summary

Major duties
You will repair, overhaul, modify, and install locking devices which make up security or surveillance systems. You will use blueprints, specifications, and sketches to plan and determine the work sequence for lock repairs. You will use tools and equipment of the locksmith trade to install locks throughout an organization. You will troubleshoot commercially manufactured locking devices to determine repair or replacement requirements.
Qualification
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform duties of a LOCKSMITH without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Perform a full repair cycle of locating malfunction, disassembly, repair, cleaning, reassembly, and reinstallation of a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices; 2) Determining the work sequence and select hand and power tools (e.g. files, picks, tweezers, tension wrenches, grinders, buffers, stamping machines, electric drills, soldering, irons, brazing torches, bench lathes and drill presses) to repair locking mechanisms; 3) Plan techniques to be used and apply judgement in the selection of tools and accepted trade practices to troubleshoot and neutralize locks according to appropriate guidelines, manufacturer drawings, diagrams, and technical manuals.
