Job summary

You will serve as a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the CRANE MAINTENANCE DIVISION OF THE LIFITNG AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Major duties

You will disassemble, repair, and assemble machinery and equipment components such as hoist, travel, swing, and boom assemblies. You will remove, install, and align travel, hoist, brake, and drive motors, gasoline and diesel engines. You will fabricate eight inch piping to exhaust systems. You perform machining operations associated with repairs such as: reboring, cylinders, bearings, bushings, turning or grinding shafts, pistons, brake drums, wheels, and manufacture of replacement parts.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: Diagnosing failures, making minor repairs, adjustments, and major repairs to a large variety of heavy-duty transportation equipment of many types. Mechanically and physically adapting or altering items to fit and mesh into systems and vehicles. Finding ways to correct defects when existing methods and procedures do not give the desired results. Determining the maximum wear allowances of parts and proper tolerances in the fitting of shafts, bearings, gears, pistons, etc. Making proper adjustments to frictions, brakes, controls, and linkage and identifying parts, test procedures, and proper greases and lubricants.
