Job summary
About the Position: This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Director for Dentistry, Department of Oral Max Fac SX (OMFS) and also supports General Dentistry Residency Program for Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program, in Bethesda, Maryland. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Major duties
Assist patients in an inpatient and ambulatory environment, providing scheduling management, and taking patient histories to prepare patients for evaluation by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Provide assistance to oral and maxillofacial surgeons during complicated treatments and oral and maxillofacial surgeries involving sedation on patients ranging from pediatric to adult, including patients with special needs. Ensure availability of equipment, instruments, and supplies for surgical cases. Function as a member of a surgical team in the performance scrub or circulation duties in the OR with special emphasis on oral and maxillofacial surgical services and specific Sterile Processing Department duties for all surgical procedures. As a surgical technician, select, assemble and organize required supplies, equipment and instruments for specific surgical procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures. Apply and use oral and maxillofacial surgery knowledge in the counseling/education of patients, General Practice Residents, Advanced General Dentistry Interns, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) residents.
Qualification

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes selecting surgical instruments and equipment and assisting in surgical procedures on patients in an operating room environment, cleaning exam/operating room after procedures; reviewing patient charts for accuracy and completeness; and monitoring patients vital signs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Certifications preferred: Certified Radiologist and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
