Job summary

Major duties
This is being announced at multiple grade levels; duties listed below will be performed in a developmental capacity at the GS-03, GS-04, GS-05, and GS-06 grade levels. At the full performance, GS-07, the incumbent will: Respond to all fire emergencies to include those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations, wild land fires, hazardous material incidents and aircraft emergencies. Use firefighting equipment to include hoses, ladders, hydrants, firefighting vehicles, etc. to control the incident. Respond to emergencies which may include hazardous material. Analyze the hazardous incident and determine the magnitude of the problem. Serve as a first responder to medical emergencies and perform medical procedures that are noninvasive.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. General Experience for GS-3 level: Six months of general experience which included work experience or military service that demonstrated the ability to follow directions and to read, understand, and retain a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures and that otherwise demonstrates the ability to perform or learn to perform the duties of the position. OR Education/Training: One year of education above the high school level related to fire protection and/or prevention OR six months of appropriate firefighter training. OR Combination of Education/Training and Experience: A combination of education/training and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 6. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30 and/or months of firefighter training by 6. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for GS-4 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; AND (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) operation of fire communications equipment. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted at GS-07 level. Must successfully, prior to promotion to the GS-04 obtain and maintain Firefighter I Must successfully, prior to promotion to theGS-05 obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II. Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions above at the GS-03, GS-04 and GS-05 level only. GS-06 level: No education substitution. GS-07 level: No education substitution.
