Major duties

Provide fire protection for a variety of structures and related areas. Drive fire apparatus to scene of fire following predetermined routes or selected alternate routes when necessary. Position vehicle considering factors such as wind direction, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, location of armaments on aircraft, etc. Apply principles of hydraulics and determine proper pressures for hose lines to establish and maintain a constant water supply during firefighting operations. Operate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment. Operate hose lines, ladders, hydrants in the control and extinguishing of fires. Perform tests, minor maintenance, and repairs to ensure operational condition of equipment. Respond to hazardous chemical spills and assist in a full range of containment and runoff control duties. Conduct rescue operations. Conduct a complete examination of patients to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the condition. Operate alarm room equipment; including radio, fire alarm, and 911 telephone.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the educations and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Following detailed instructions to assist with basic firefighter duties, such as using and/or maintaining basic firefighter equipment; or maintaining a clean environment in the department facilities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Utilizing and maintaining firefighting equipment; 2) Applying basic first aid; AND 3) Participating in firefighting and rescue situations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Performing standard firefighting techniques; 2) Responding to basic hazardous materials incidents; AND 3) Performing basic emergency medical care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Performing structural firefighting duties, including controlling and extinguishing fires and/or rescue operations; 2) Providing emergency medical services; 3) Responding to and mitigating hazardous materials incidents; and 4) Driving and operating firefighting apparatus, such as, pumpers and aerial ladder trucks. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Certification Requirements:GS-0081-04 Firefighter (Entry Level) must successfully complete any and all required training, to include being DoD Certified in Firefighter I and Firefighter II within a maximum of 12 month. GS-0081-05 Firefighter must possess and maintain the following ProBoard/IFSAAC certifications: EMT - Basic (National Registry or California State) Firefighter I Firefighter II Driver Operator - Pumper GS-0081-06 Firefighter (Basic Life Support) must possess and maintain the following ProBoard/IFSAAC certifications: EMT - Basic (National Registry or California State) Firefighter I Firefighter II Driver Operator - Pumper Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply GS-0081-07 Firefighter (Basic Life Support) must possess and maintain the following ProBoard/IFSAAC certifications: EMT - Basic (National Registry or California State) Hazardous Materials Technician Firefighter I Firefighter II Driver Operator - Pumper Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply Driver Operator Aerial ****You MUST submit a copy of the above certifications certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) (AND California or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration). Education
