Job summary

Major duties

You will provide engineering technical services involved with the execution of work assignments supporting U.S. and allied ships and/or shore facilities. You will task assignments cover all stages of equipment and life cycle support as well as interfaces with other ship systems. You will include the investigation, analysis, evaluation, and resolution of operational deficiencies caused by malfunctions or casualties within the equipment. You will demonstrate capabilities to perform assignments beyond a narrow range of skills and capabilities. You will communicate at high levels, both orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships with the sponsors and Fleet customers. You will develop plans for project accomplishment. Incumbent will be capable of breaking complex projects into smaller tasks and documenting them so other engineers, technicians, or logisticians can complete tasking.

Qualification

For the GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional Engineer evaluating engineering requirements to provide guidance on the design, development, testing, and evaluation of ship combat systems and resolve engineering problems for a warfare program. For the GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional Engineer analyzing shipboard combat systems requirements and issues to test, evaluate, and resolve engineering problems for a warfare program. Education

Applicants must meet at least one of the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Professional Engineering Series (08XX) - Degree: A professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university; OR a degree with curriculum in differential and integral calculus, with additional courses in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics; or electronics; -OR- Professional Engineering Series (08XX) - Substitution of Education/Experience: A combination of education and experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering; and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (a) professional registration, (b) evidence of successfully passing the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination; (c) successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified above; or (d) successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering provided that it included at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
