Major duties

Operates a computer workstation to receive and convert customer data (text and graphics) into formats suitable for production runs on an electronic duplicating system. Sets up and operates large, high-speed copiers/duplicators consisting of electronic control centers and on-line automatically controlled staplers and sorters to reproduce multiple copies of forms, manuals, textbooks, and other types of materials. Scans and inserts hardcopy or previously stored images into customer documents according to customer specifications using network-based image capture and retrieval systems. Operates bindery machines such as guillotine cutters, paper drills, shrink-wrap machines, and other types of binding equipment. Utilizes network software to capture and/or merge data/information originated with a wide variety of word processing, graphics, and desktop publishing software packages. Provides on-the-job guidance and/or written procedures to lower-graded operators. Maintains records of work completed, ensures production units are recorded for billing, and notifies supervisor/lead of job completion.

Qualification

To qualify for an Electronic Duplicating System Technician, your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Setting up and operating large, high speed production copiers/duplicators and other printing equipment; Operating personal computers/workstations, including the use of various software packages (Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and other document creation software), to reproduce multiple copies of forms, notices, instruction manuals and textbooks, posters, pamphlets, and similar types of materials for black and white and color publications; Performing data entry into information systems to generate cost estimates, which include but not limited to customer identification numbers, customer addresses, date of requests, required delivery dates, and number of units for each process; and Providing customer service that includes answering questions and promoting services to all customers. B. Education Substitution: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-05 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: The work requires long periods of standing, bending, and walking during equipment setup, adjustment, operation, and maintenance. Work requires operator to lift light to moderately heavy objects such as boxes of paper of less than 55 pounds and other equipment supplies. Work Environment: Work is performed in a printing production environment where other printing and printing-related operations are being performed. The immediate work area is climate-controlled and adequately lighted. Moderate risks and discomforts occur from paper dusts, paper cuts, machine noise, dry ink, glue, etc. Extra safety precautions are required when clearing out jams from the finishing unit and fuser to avoid burns from extremely hot surfaces.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study. FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
