Major duties
This is a developmental position to the full performance level of Civil Engineer (Geotechnical), GS-0810-12, duties at the GS-12 are: Develops or assists in the development of scopes of work and budget estimates. Performs and/or directs field investigations, field and laboratory testing programs and analysis of soils and foundations as they relate to project Conduct complex engineer analysis of seepage, slope stability, geology, foundation design. Conduct engineering and quality support to assigned projects for conformance with established criteria during construction. Actively manage geotechnical staff in support of projects.
Qualification

Basic Requirement for Engineer: Please refer to the General Schedule Qualification Standards Basic Requirements for Engineering Series for education requirements. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Minimum Qualifications for the GS-11: GS-11 - Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with the investigation, study and design for civil engineering projects with emphasis on geotechnical projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: civil engineering. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications for the GS-12: GS-12 - Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working with soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering related to military and/or civil works projects such as analysis of slope stability and seepage, and design of geotechnical aspects or features of dams and/or levees. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
