Job summary

About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and is located at the Karing Kennels on Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan.

Major duties

Incumbent will perform duties of the attached Animal Caretaker, NA-5048-04, position number 80738 within skill level and ability. Upon satisfactory completion of training period, incumbent will be non-competitively promoted to the target level position. Supervisor or trainer assigns work either orally or in writing; checks work in progress and is available for special instructions. Skill and knowledge: Must be able to apply knowledge of normal appearance and activities of animals to recognize obvious changes such as but not limited to refusal to eat. Must be able to apply knowledge of normal food and liquid needs and provides standard amounts. Must be able to show skills in handling animals with hands and other devices for holding and transferring. Physical Effort: Must be able to frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and able to continuously stand, walk, and frequently stoop, reach, push, pull and bend for long periods of time. Often requires lifting and carrying feed materials weighing up to 75 pounds with assistance, and frequently handles items such as feed trays weighing up to 20 pounds. Often physical effort is required to lift or handle animals. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. Inside work often exposes the caretaker to unpleasant odors and noises. Outside work exposes the caretaker to the hot sun and occasional bad weather. Usually works on concrete floors and is exposed to bites, scratches, and animal waste. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying Experience: Some experience working with animals such as cats and dogs is preferred. Must satisfactory complete a pre-employment physical within 60 days of employment. Must complete pre-vaccine rabies series within 60 days of employment. Until the vaccine rabies series has been completed duties will be restricted to non-quarantined animals, limiting areas of responsibilities. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a Tier 1 (T1) background check investigation. Possess a valid SOFA driver's license if needed for driving.

Education
