Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a experienced Principal Materials & Processes Engineer / Sr. Principal Materials & Processes Engineer specializing in composite materials for airframe structures to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Vehicle Engineering organization. Position located in Iuka, MS.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Performs root cause analysis of material failures, provides effective solutions to production composite issues

  • Generates test plans & reports

  • Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems

  • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop non-metallic processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes

  • Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications

  • Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications

  • May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures

  • May travel to subcontractor locations

 

Basic Qualifications:

(This requisition may be filled at either level based on qualifications below)

  • Principal M&P Engineer (level 3) requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience to include a background in composite materials for airframe structures OR a Master of Science (MS) degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 3 years of experience to include a background in metallic materials, composite materials, non-destructive inspections, or coatings and/or subsystems for airframe structures

  • Sr. Principal M&P Engineer (level 4) requires a minimum of a BS in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 8 years of experience to include a background in metallic materials, composite materials, non-destructive inspections, or coatings and/or subsystems for airframe structures OR a Master of Science (MS) degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience to include a background in metallic materials, composite materials, non-destructive inspections, or coatings and/or subsystems for airframe structures

  • Experience with composite fabrication and design on aircraft

  • Experience with repair processes composite materials used in aerospace structures

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance prior to start

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) Clearance

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree discipline in Materials Science or similar

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment

  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously

  • Ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions

  • Experience with military specs and standards

  • Experience interfacing with a military customer
