Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems Division is currently seeking a Manager Aeronautical Engineering 3 (Chief Engineer) to support the Air Force Sustainment programs in our Propulsion Systems Business Unit at our Hill AFB, UT campus.

Role Description & Responsibilities:

The Air Force Sustainment Chief Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the technical execution for all propulsion sustainment activities of MMIII and RSLP SRM propulsion motors, next phase proposal development, and program content growth.  This role will report to the Defense and Commercial Programs Engineering Director.

  • Serve as final design authority for the NG MMIII and RSLP product lines

  • Provide overall leadership, direction and applicable management to the Project Engineering team (to include coaching team members, resolving conflict, reviewing performance, and initiating corrective actions)

  • Act as a technical focal point for the customer ensuring customer satisfaction with all technical efforts including participation in customer and government review boards

  • Provide input to and participation in Air Force customer escalation briefings up to the Pentagon and Congressional levels

  • Work on problem solving and failure investigations of technical issues

  • Drive timely and clearly communicated decisions and recommendations

  • Work closely with the Program Manager to manage technical execution of the detailed program plan

  • Manage cost and schedule for the technical effort on the program

  • Work with Science & Engineering functional management to assure proper technical support

  • Provide technical direction on contract changes and Statement of Work negotiations

  • Drive technical excellence (by upholding technical standards for project, managing technical risks, supporting cost goals, and ensuring requirements compliance)

Basic Qualifications: 

  • BS degree in Engineering or related field required, MS preferred

  • PhD with  years’ experience, 4 MS with 6 years’ experience, or BS with 8 years’ experience 

Required Qualifications:

  • Supervisory: Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of formal or informal supervisory/ management/ team management/ leadership experience

  • Ability to travel:  Travel expectation of 5% – 10%

  • Strong understanding of solid rocket motor system design, development, and manufacture

  • Must be qualify for or hold a DoD clearance

Experience Preferred:

  • Engineering leadership experience in solid rocket motor development, qualification, and production cycles

  • Candidate should have a minimum of 8 years in solid rocket motor design and manufacture experience.

  • Demonstrated credibility with internal and external customers

  • Proposal technical volume lead experience

  • MS preferred

  • Successful candidate must be able to pass a background check for the Federal Safe Explosives Act (SEA)

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with problem solving, problem investigation teams and critical decision making skills

  • Strong understanding and broad application of PS engineering systems (engineering standards, configuration management, material review board, process control, tooling, facilities, software, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience in generating technical solutions in the absence of complete customer requirements

  • Management of engineering scope as it pertains to budgeting and participation in EAC reviews

  • Strong sense of urgency and work ethic in ensuring engineering meets customer and program expectations in a timely and efficient manner

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated experience with high value customer presentations

  • Demonstrated team leadership skills - leader of significant technical projects or investigations and management of multiple program tasks to schedule and budget Experience with the proposal process

  • Ability to qualify for DOD secret clearance

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • An understanding of program management practices: establishing and executing to budgets and schedules.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
