THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 5 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a TITLE 5 FIREFIGHTER (HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TECH/BASIC LIFE SUPPORT) (MI 127 CES), Position Description Number NGT6311000 and is part of the MI 127 Wing, National Guard.

Major duties

***THIS IS A TITLE 5 EXCEPTED NATIONAL GUARD POSITION*** The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as a Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician-Basic Life Support) assigned to a crew engaged in airfield and structural firefighting and crash-rescue operations. Drives and operates firefighting vehicles of significant complexity to respond to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials (HAZMAT), for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release, and to conduct performance of non-invasive emergency medical procedures. 1. Performs hazard and risk assessment and conducts a complete incident analysis. Conducts immediate incident surveys to completely identify materials involved, determines specific HAZMAT that have been released, analyzes surrounding conditions to identify the materials and containers involved; predicts behavior of a material and/or container and recommends mitigation actions. 2. Performs Basic Life Support. Initiates established medical protocols in providing basic life support. 3. Drives and operates firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles. Drives to the scene of the fire following a predetermined route or selecting an alternate when necessary and positions vehicle considering factors, such as wind direction, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, location of armament on aircraft, etc. 4. Performs crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. Performs work at airfields handling aircraft (e.g., fighters, bombers, cargo, passenger) carrying large volumes of fuel, conventional and sometimes nuclear weapons, or highly flammable or explosive cargo; or handling a large number of air moves, or a moderate number involving pilot training, or other air moves with high crash or fire potential. 5. Performs structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities. Performs structural firefighting duties at facilities which may be engaged in the production, storage, and testing of fuels, explosives, gases, or other chemicals and materials which are capable of producing extensive and hazardous toxicological, biological, or radiological products. 6. Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. Performs functional tests and inspections. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and housekeeping duties associated with assigned facilities. Qualification

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Months Required: 12 Months --Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to waterflow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc. .--Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy. --Knowledge of HAZMAT emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions. --Knowledge of basic life support techniques and protocols; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders .--Skill in operating communications equipment. --Ability to apply basic life support techniques and protocols; conduct complete HAZMAT incident analysis; maintain good working relations; communicate orally and in writing; and lift and carry heavy loads. Maximum Entry Age The maximum entry age for DoD firefighters is 37. An individual not appointed by the last day of the month in which the individual becomes age 37 will not be originally appointed or assigned to these positions. Education

You must meet the following Education requirement to qualify for this position: Employee is required to be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification System as Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II), Hazmat Operations (includes Hazmat Awareness), Apparatus Driver Operator- Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Apparatus Driver Operator- Pumper, Apparatus Driver Operator- Mobile Water Supply (MWS) Must be a certified National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Michigan EMT certified. You must provide transcripts or other documentation to support your Educational claims. To receive credit for Education, you must provide documentation of proof that you meet the Education requirements for this position.
