Overview
Bath Iron Works is seeking a 1st shift Supervisor to join our Safety & Health department. In this role you will be responsible for supporting safety operations on 1st and 2nd shift, leading 1st and 2nd shift Safety Technician operations, and assisting with the administration and management of occupational health and safety department operations and programs. This position ensures regulatory compliance, audit performance and quality, and review and abatement of hazards.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Leadership:
- Directly supervise 1st shift safety technicians and provide direction to 2nd shift safety technicians.
- Primary responsibility for safety technician schedule across all shifts.
- Identifying workplace hazards and feasible means of abatement.
- Participating in regular scheduled workplace inspections.
- Developing fall protection plans.
- Provide guidance and support to 2nd shift operations as needed.
- Project Execution:
- Assisting with establishing and maintaining safety and health programs and management systems.
- Lead execution of Safety Technician activities and scheduling.
- Lead and provide feedback to departmental projects.
- Monitor work quality of safety technicians.
- Responsible for fit test operations, including staffing, training, supplies, and equipment.
- Training and Development:
- Provide training as necessary to ensure total safety culture is attainable.
- Oversee safety technician provided training program quality and scheduling.
- Track safety technician qualifications and provide training as needed to support safe operations.
- Team Collaboration and Communication:
- Assisting management and supervision with the recognition and abatement of hazards.
- Providing direction and technical support on compliance with OSHA standards and company procedures.
- Use electronic time accounting system (WFM) to maintain safety technician charging and time.
- Ensure accountability of task and goal completion.
- Understand, support, and administer union labor contract(s) as necessary.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Conduct root cause accident and incident investigations as well as developing subsequent corrective action(s).
- Reviewing the effectiveness of compliance programs.
- Participate in Business Operating System (BOS) principles.
Responsibilities
- Bachelor's Degree in environmental, safety, and health science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- OSHA 30 Maritime Trainer.
- Specific demonstrated experience in work place health and safety programs/oversight may be substituted for educational requirements.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of safety experience in a shipyard, maritime, industrial, or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Experience in a shipyard or heavy manufacturing preferred.
- Experience working in union and/or multi-shift operations preferred.
- Specific experience in lifting and handling, rigging, fall protection, welding, lockout tags-plus, test and activation, confined space entry, industrial hygiene and / or ergonomics preferred.
- Working knowledge of fit test programs and equipment.
- Technical writing skills and knowledge of OSHA and/or industry standards preferred.
- Understanding of and ability to utilize A3 and 5-Why problem solving methodologies.
- Must be physically able to lift, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint required.
- Ability to utilize workflow and collaboration tools such as JIRA, SharePoint, and Smartsheets.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
- Ability to successfully multi-task and to plan and coordinate time dependent activities required
- Good organizational skills, strong interpersonal, team building, and decision-making abilities required.
- Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities required.
- Ability to establish effective relationships with personnel in all areas and levels of the company required.
