The Naval & Oceanic Systems business unit headquartered in Annapolis, MD is seeking dependable individuals willing to work in a collaborative environment and that are interested in expanding their horizons. The Mechanical Engineering Department is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer / Senior Principal Systems Engineer with a structural and thermal analysis and design background to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals.
Essential Functions:
Perform linear and non-linear structural analyses of individual components and complex underwater structures using a combination of hand-calculations, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and bolted joint calculations. Ensure that designs meet program requirements and are consistent with program schedule and budget objectives.
Perform thermal analysis of electronics, cooling systems, and fluid systems considering conduction, convection, and radiation. Design thermal management systems including, refrigerant-based cooling systems, closed-loop fluid systems, and closed loop ventilation systems. Design and perform tests to validate or troubleshoot thermal performance. Experience with analysis tools such as Matlab, MathCAD, and thermal analysis tools such as IcePak, CFDesign, Simcenter Flow/Thermal, and ANSYS/APDL is highly desirable.
Experience with undersea vehicle and system design is highly desirable. Successful candidate will be expected to provide technical leadership to the department in all areas of structural and thermal analysis.
The candidate must be able to collaborate in a team environment, prioritize and adjust tasks to accomplish the project result, prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously, and comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
Basic Qualifications for a Principal Systems Engineer:
- BS degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace. or equivalent STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of experience in structural and/or thermal analysis or MS degree with 3 years of experience or 1 year with PhD
- Proficiency in using Finite Element Analysis tools (FEMAP/Nastran or ANSYS), bolted joint analysis, and structural hand calculations.
- Proficiency with thermal analysis tools and thermal loads calculations
- Proficiency in using common engineering design, production, analysis, and office tools.
- US citizen with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI and pass a polygraph.
Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Systems Engineer:
- BS degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace, or equivalent STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of experience in thermal analysis or MS degree with 6 years of experience or 4 years with PhD
- Proficiency in using Finite Element Analysis tools (FEMAP/Nastran or ANSYS), bolted joint analysis, and structural hand calculations.
- Proficiency with thermal analysis tools and thermal loads calculations
- Proficiency in using common engineering design, production, analysis, and office tools.
- US citizen with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI and pass a polygraph.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment where multiple projects are being developed and deployed simultaneously
- Demonstrated skills/experience in the following multi-disciplined areas: shock, vibration, bolted joint calculations, and fracture analysis
- Demonstrated skills/experience with CFD analysis, familiarity with materials design for the undersea environment, manufacturing techniques, and integration and test.
- Experience with composites design and analysis.
- Active TS/SCI clearance
